Across the United States, category 1A and 1B population is being provided with doses of approved Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Among those in category 1A or 1B, who gets these vaccines first? Apparently, whoever is “in the know” and has “first access” to the registration process of a city or county or hospital or fire department or suddenly propped up charity venture front run by students (courtesy: Philadelphia) or who knows.

Why is this system unfair?

As the city of Dallas in Texas quickly realized, most of the first vaccine doses went to affluent neighborhoods in the city, as friends and neighbors in these neighborhoods shared information on how to register and collectively gobbled up the first available appointments. Some of these registration URLs, including one sent out by my church, turned out to be spurious and the appointments invalidated at vaccination location, after waiting in the queue for hours. Those who didn’t have multiple day jobs to run a family could afford to try out multiple locations and perhaps find success at one…
